AFC Bournemouth have announced the appointment of former player Matt Ritchie as the club’s new head coach, continuing their tradition of bringing former club figures into key leadership roles.
Ritchie, who made 142 appearances for Bournemouth between 2013 and 2016, returns to the Vitality Stadium in a senior coaching position after a playing career spanning 17 years, including experience in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
During his time with the Cherries, the Scottish midfielder scored 31 goals and played a vital role in the club’s rise through the English football pyramid.
Tiago Pinto, Bournemouth’s President of Football Operations, praised the appointment, describing Ritchie as an excellent addition to the coaching staff.
Pinto highlighted Ritchie’s deep connection with the club and extensive football experience, stating that his understanding of Bournemouth’s culture and values makes him an ideal fit for the role.
Speaking after the announcement, Ritchie expressed his excitement about returning to the club.
“Bournemouth means a great deal to me, and coming back in this role is incredibly special,” he said. “I have spent years preparing for this opportunity by developing my understanding of the technical and strategic side of the game. I’m looking forward to working alongside Marco Rose and helping guide the club into the future.”
The appointment follows a remarkable campaign for Bournemouth under former manager Andoni Iraola. The club exceeded expectations by finishing sixth in the league, securing qualification for European competition for the first time in its 127-year history.
Bournemouth will now hope that Ritchie’s return can help preserve the club’s identity while building on one of the most successful periods in its history.
