Borussia Dortmund have officially announced a long-term contract extension for center-back Nico Schlotterbeck, tying the defender to the club until 2031 and bringing an end to months of negotiations.

The German international signed the new deal on Friday, in what club officials described as a key step toward ensuring long-term sporting stability.

CEO Carsten Cramer highlighted the importance of the agreement, stating that Schlotterbeck holds significant value both on and off the pitch. He added that the player understands the club’s long-term vision and sees himself as part of its future.

Schlotterbeck, who joined Dortmund from SC Freiburg in 2022, has made 155 appearances for the club, contributing 10 goals and 18 assists.

On the international stage, he has earned 25 caps for the Germany national football team since making his debut the same year.

Managing Director for Sport Lars Ricken emphasized the club’s goal of resolving the situation before mid-April, noting Schlotterbeck’s leadership role within both Dortmund and the national team.

He also praised the defender’s swift return to top form following a serious injury, describing it as a testament to his determination and quality.

Financially, the new contract represents a balanced agreement. While Schlotterbeck will receive a salary increase, reports indicate his fixed annual earnings will be around €10 million, with bonuses unlikely to push the total near previously rumored figures of €14 million.

The deal also includes a release clause reportedly set between €50 million and €60 million, applicable only to a select group of clubs.

This clause provides flexibility for the player, particularly with the upcoming World Cup, while offering Dortmund a level of financial security.

The extension removes the risk of losing Schlotterbeck on a reduced fee this summer or on a free transfer in the future, a scenario the club was keen to avoid. It also strengthens Dortmund’s defensive core as they continue building for the future.

Speculation had previously linked Schlotterbeck with a move to FC Bayern Munich, especially before Dayot Upamecano extended his own contract.

Whether Bayern are among the clubs eligible to trigger the release clause remains unclear.
