The General Authority for Cultural Palaces has recently released a new novel for young readers titled “Bilad Al-Dhahab” (Land of Gold) by writer Hassanat Al-Hakim, illustrated by artist Shaimaa Al-Kilani.

The novel takes its readers on an exciting and imaginative journey into the enchanting world of Nubia through fourteen chapters, following the adventures of the curious child Hamza and a magical butterfly. Together, they explore Nubia’s key tourist landmarks while discovering the region’s authentic customs and traditions. The story skillfully blends suspense with a strong sense of cultural belonging and identity.

On the back cover, Dr. Shaimaa Al-Sa‘eedi, Director General of the Atlas of Folk Traditions Department at the General Authority for Cultural Palaces, praised the work, writing:

“Bilad Al-Dhahab by Hassanat Al-Hakim takes us on an extraordinary journey into the heart of enchanting Nubia, where its eternal Nile meets a clear sky. It is not merely a novel, but a documentary journey into the depths of Nubian culture and its most prominent tourist landmarks, rich with ancestral stories, seen through the eyes of a child who dreams of adventure and a magical butterfly that knows the path to beauty.”

Hassanat Al-Hakim is known for her prolific and diverse literary output for children, including numerous stories and poetry collections. Her most notable works include Mohamed and Mina, The Bee and the Locust, The Dress of Happiness, The Doll King, Makers of Joy, The Balloon, Let’s Sing, Why We Thank God, Women in the Holy Qur’an, and The Green Sunset.

Bilad Al-Dhahab is considered a valuable addition to young adult literature, successfully combining engaging storytelling with cultural and geographical documentation in a creative narrative that introduces younger generations to the richness and beauty of Nubian heritage.
