US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu discussed on Wednesday "ongoing efforts to locate and secure the release" of Americans believed to be held hostage in Gaza, the White House said.
During a phone call, Biden also stressed to Netanyahu the importance to focus on ensuring “a pathway for a permanent peace” following the war.
Both sides also reviewed the ongoing discussions to ensure the safe passage of foreign nationals wishing to leave Gaza as soon as possible.
Furthermore, Biden reiterated that Israel has every right and responsibility to defend its citizens from terrorism, and to do so in a manner consistent with international humanitarian law.
The US president also pointed out that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people or their legitimate aspirations.
