The White House announced that US President Joe Biden will travel to Texas, next Sunday, to meet with community members and families in the wake of a school shooting that left 21 people dead, including 19 children.

The White House said - in a statement quoted by the American newspaper "The Hill" - that "US First Lady Jill Biden will accompany the US President during the visit, and they will express their condolences to the community who lost twenty-one people in the horrific shooting incident at an elementary school."

Both the president and the first lady had previously indicated that they would travel to Texas to mourn the death of the victims of the shooting.

Earlier, Biden declared their deaths as senseless and demanded action to try to curb the violence, according to Bloomberg.

“I hoped, when I became president, I would not have to do this again,” Biden said at the White House, in sometimes halting, emotional remarks. “Another massacre in Uvalde, Texas. An elementary school. Beautiful, innocent second, third and fourth graders.”

“As a nation,” he said, “we have to ask: When are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When are we going to do what we know in our gut needs to be done?”
