US President Joe Biden said Tuesday that he asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a phone call on Monday, for a temporary pause to the fighting in Gaza.
A White House spokesman had said earlier that Biden and Netanyahu discussed the possibility of a "tactical pause" in the fighting in Gaza for humanitarian reasons and the possibility of releasing the hostages during their conversation on Monday.
On the other hand, the White House said in a statement that US Vice President Kamala Harris stressed, in a phone call with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday, the importance of protecting civilian lives and respecting international humanitarian law.
He added that Harris also stressed the necessity of accelerating the delivery of aid to Gaza and holding extremist settlers responsible for violent actions in the occupied West Bank.
