Turkish club Beşiktaş announced on Friday the dismissal of Norwegian coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær following the team’s disappointing elimination from the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers.
The Black Eagles were knocked out after a 1-0 home defeat to Lausanne in the playoff round in Istanbul.
The result means Beşiktaş will be absent from all European competitions this season, having already been eliminated from the Europa League qualifiers earlier this summer, despite starting their domestic campaign with a 2-1 win over Eyüpspor.
In a statement, the club said: “The Board of Directors has decided to terminate the contract of head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær. We thank him for his contributions during his tenure and wish him the best in his future career.”
The former Manchester United manager had been under growing pressure since Beşiktaş’s early exit to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League qualifiers at the end of July. The defeat to Lausanne proved the final blow, bringing his short tenure to an abrupt end.
