The Beijing 2022 Winter Games organizing committee announced, on Sunday, that 34 new Covid-19 cases were detected among Olympic Games-related personnel.

Among the total infections, 23 were among new airport arrivals, while 11 were people already in the “closed loop” bubble that separates event personnel from the public, said a notice on the Games’ official website.

The number of coronavirus cases since January 23 has risen to 139.

The Winter Games are being held under strict coronavirus rules. Anyone who tests positive shall be isolated in a dedicated hotel. After two negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart they may leave isolation.

In accordance with the Beijing 2022 Olympics playbook, positive cases will be able to take part once they have returned two negative tests.

Last Monday, media outlets reported that 78 people tested positive for Covid-19 at Beijing’s main airport ahead of the Winter Olympics.

The arrivals who tested positive included a team member but it is not known if the member is an athlete or official. Officials conducted covid testing of 529 Olympic-related arrivals at Beijing Capital International Airport.

The arrivals included 153 athletes and team officials, along with 376 other stakeholders – a category that includes the media and Games partners.
