Barcelona forward Luis Suárez is set for a six-week stint on the sidelines with an injury to the external meniscus of the right knee.

Suarez played the full time on Thursday's clash against Atletico Madrid in Saudia Arabia, where the Blaugrana went down to a 2-3 defeat in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup.

Barcelona's official website reported on Sunday that the Uruguayan underwent a surgery on 'the external meniscus of his right knee.'

"The first team player, Luis Suárez, has been operated on this Sunday by Dr. Ramon Cugat, who used keyhole surgery to resolve an injury to the external meniscus of the right knee by performing a suture. The Uruguayan striker will be out for approximately four months," Barca's official website reported.

Barcelona now have to sign a new striker during January's transfers to compensate the Uruguayan's absence.

The 32-year-old star has made 23 caps for Barca this season in all competitions, netting 14 goals; 11 in the league and three in the Champions League.

"Suárez has participated in a total of 23 games this season, in which he has scored 14 goals: 11 in the league and three in the Champions League. In addition, he has the most assists in the Spanish league in 2019/20 with a total of seven," Barca's website added.
