The Football Australia has announced a contract extension for national team head coach Tony Popovic through the end of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, reinforcing the federation's commitment to stability as the Socceroos prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Popovic took charge of the Australian national team in 2024, succeeding Graham Arnold. Since his appointment, he has overseen a promising run of results, recording 10 victories, four draws, and four defeats in 18 matches.

Speaking after the announcement, Popovic expressed his appreciation for the federation's continued confidence in his leadership.

He emphasized that his mission from the outset had been to build a competitive team for the future while delivering immediate results, with World Cup qualification serving as a primary objective.

The Australian coach added that the coming years present an important opportunity to continue developing the squad and compete strongly in major tournaments, particularly the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which will be hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Football Australia's chief executive welcomed the extension, stating that maintaining continuity in the coaching staff provides greater stability and clarity for the national team's long-term planning.

He highlighted the importance of technical consistency as Australia prepares for a demanding international schedule.

Australia is set to make its sixth consecutive World Cup appearance at the 2026 tournament.

The Socceroos have been drawn into Group D alongside the United States, Paraguay, and Turkey.

With the World Cup about to begin and a renewed commitment from the federation, Australia hopes that extending Popovic's tenure will provide the foundation for success both in North America in 2026 and at the Asian Cup the following year.
