AU Holds Emergency Meeting over GERD Crisis

The African Union holds an emergency meeting today, Friday,  to discuss the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam “GERD” crisis ahead of the Security Council meeting next Monday to discuss the same crisis.

Earlier, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the head of the African Union (AU), called for an emergency meeting of the African Union office with the three parties to the Renaissance Dam crisis "Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan, via video conferencing at 3 pm Cairo local time.

The meeting represents as an attempt to reach an agreement, after the three parties agreed to attend, and provide an opportunity for African mediation.

Noteworthy, Egypt asked the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to intervene in the dispute of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue to oblige Ethiopia to negotiate in good faith with Egypt and Sudan to reach a just and balanced agreement.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the move aims to prevent Ethiopia from taking any unilateral action, which could negatively affect the negotiations.
