Attorney General Orders Detention of Police Officer for Assaulting Lawyer

Egypt’s Attorney General issued an arrest warrant for Lieutenant Abdul Rahman al-Shirawi on charges of beating a lawyer in Mahalla al-Kubra on Thursday evening.

After being questioned, the Public Prosecution ordered the detention of Abdul Rahman al-Shirawi for 4 days pending investigations.

The investigation of the Public Prosecution revealed details of the incident, which began at 8 pm Cairo local time, on Thursday, when lawyer Ahmed Elwan was staying in his car in front of the police response station in Al-Hanafi Street in Mahalla al-Kubra waiting for his family members.

Meanwhile, al-Shirawi asked him to leave but Elwan refused; so a quarrel erupted between them then the officer and a number of his police escorts beat the lawyer and severely injured him. They held him inside a police vehicle and beat him until they arrived at the police station in Mahalla al-Kubra where a colleague of  Elwan and the head detective noticed him.

The head detective rescued the lawyer and a report on this incident was written. The Interior Ministry suspended the officer.

The Public Prosecution heard the testimony of the victim, and the testimony of the lawyer who witnessed the victim while being taken down of the police vehicle.

The Public Prosecution also interrogated the officer for arresting the lawyer unlawfully. The Public Prosecution ordered the detention of the officer for four days pending investigations.
