A high-stakes European clash awaits as Atletico Madrid host Arsenal on Wednesday night in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Atletico Madrid secured their place in the last four after eliminating Barcelona in the quarter-finals, while Arsenal advanced by overcoming Sporting Lisbon.
The return leg is scheduled for May 5 at the Emirates Stadium in London.
Diego Simeone’s side will be aiming to reach their first Champions League final since 2016, led by French star Antoine Griezmann.
On the other side, Arsenal, under manager Mikel Arteta, are targeting a return to the final for the first time since 2006, with Bukayo Saka playing a key role in their campaign.
This will be only the fourth meeting between the two teams in UEFA competitions, with each side claiming one win and one draw in their previous encounters.
Atletico’s recent record against English clubs in European competitions has been challenging, with just two wins in their last 12 matches. However, they remain strong at home, losing only twice in 18 matches against English opposition in Madrid.
The Spanish side have also impressed offensively this season, scoring 34 goals in the competition, their highest tally in a single Champions League campaign.
Arsenal enter the match with confidence after winning their last seven games against Spanish teams in the competition, including a 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid earlier this season during the league phase.
Dutch referee Danny Makkelie will officiate the match, assisted by an all-Dutch officiating team, with Dennis Higler and Pol van Boekel in charge of VAR.
The stage is set for a thrilling encounter as both teams look to take a crucial step toward the Champions League final.
