UEFA has suspended Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Álvarez for 10 months after he tested positive for a banned substance during a Europa League match against Manchester United.

In an official statement released on X, the Spanish club confirmed the disciplinary ruling, noting that UEFA’s investigation acknowledged there was no intent from the 30-year-old player to enhance performance.

The banned substance reportedly entered his system after he mistakenly took medication belonging to his partner that was prescribed for hair loss, which contained a prohibited component.

Despite the absence of intent, UEFA regulations place full responsibility on the player, who is required to verify the legality of any medication before use.

Álvarez had already accepted a provisional suspension starting June 2, 2025.

As a result, he will be eligible to return to competitive matches on April 2, 2026, with clearance to resume team training from February 2, two months earlier.

Yeray, who previously battled testicular cancer in 2016, expressed regret over the situation and is expected to hold a press conference soon to clarify details.

The case has drawn significant attention not only because of Álvarez’s standing at Bilbao but also due to the club’s recent struggles in the transfer market.

FIFA recently rejected Bilbao’s request to register defender Aymeric Laporte, who was set to rejoin from Saudi side Al Nassr, further complicating their defensive options.
