At Least 20 Killed in Fire at Illegal Nursing Home in Russia

More than 20 people died in a fire in an illegal nursing home in Russia’s Kemerovo, Western Siberia region, emergency services told TASS on Saturday.

"At the site of the fire, rescuers continue to work on the rubble in conditions of low air temperature. According to the latest data, 20 people died," the department said.

It was reported earlier that at least 13 people were killed in the blaze.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor's office of Russia’s Kemerovo region in Western Siberia started an investigation into a fire in a nursing home in Kemerovo, according to the press service of the department.

"The prosecutor's office of the Kemerovo region - Kuzbass opened an investigation into the fire, as a result of which people died. <...> The situation is under control in the regional prosecutor's office," the statement read.

On his Telegram channel, Governor of Kuzbass Sergey Tsivilev noted: "We will inspect all institutions of this type, primarily private ones. The inspections will be completed within a week.”

A fire broke out in a two-story wooden building of a private nursing home in Kemerovo, which was assigned an increased rank of difficulty.

Law enforcement agencies told TASS that the establishment was illegal.
