An ambush by armed men killed at least 12 people in northern Burkina Faso.

On Sunday, a local official confirmed to the AFP news agency that 10 backup troops had fallen and 2 civilians were killed in the ambush.

"Yesterday morning, a food convoy escorted by volunteers for the Defence of the Fatherland (VDP) was the target of an ambush on the Dori-Gorgadji road," a security source said.

Armed groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and ISIS have carried out regular attacks in northern and eastern the country since 2015.

These attacks killed more than 2,000 people and displaced nearly two million people.

These attacks resulted in unrest linked to extremist groups from Burkina Faso to neighboring countries (Mali and Niger).
