Liverpool suffered a damaging 4–2 defeat away to Aston Villa on Friday night at Villa Park in the opening match of the 37th round of the 2025–26 Premier League season.

The result dealt a major blow to Liverpool’s hopes of securing a Champions League place, while Aston Villa strengthened their position in the race for a top-four finish.

Egyptian star Mohamed Salah made his return from injury during the second half, coming on in the 74th minute to replace Cody Gakpo after recovering from the muscular issue he sustained against Crystal Palace.

Aston Villa took the lead shortly before halftime through Morgan Rogers, who fired home a superb strike in the 42nd minute to give the hosts a deserved advantage.

Liverpool responded early in the second half when Virgil van Dijk equalized in the 52nd minute, but Villa quickly regained control. Ollie Watkins restored the home side’s lead five minutes later before adding his second goal of the match in the 73rd minute.

John McGinn completed Villa’s dominant display with a fourth goal in the 89th minute, while Van Dijk scored again deep into stoppage time to reduce the deficit for Liverpool.

The victory lifted Aston Villa to fourth place in the Premier League standings with 62 points, while Liverpool remained fifth on 59 points ahead of the final round of the season.
