Croatian football icon Luka Modrić appears to be approaching the end of his legendary playing career, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

Modrić's contract with AC Milan is set to expire in the coming days, and reports suggest retirement is now closer than ever for the veteran midfielder.

According to AS, Modrić has received several offers in recent weeks, but he currently seems to lack the motivation to continue competing at the highest level. The report adds that some people close to him have advised him to bring his career to a close after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament could therefore serve as the final chapter of Modrić’s remarkable playing career.

At the 2026 World Cup, Croatia will face England, Panama, and Ghana in the group stage.

Croatia has enjoyed significant success in its last two World Cup appearances, reaching the final in 2018 and the semi-finals in 2022, with Modrić playing a central role in both campaigns.

The report also notes that a return to Real Madrid in a non-playing capacity remains a possibility, although no discussions have taken place so far.
