A dramatic 1–1 draw unfolded between Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal FC on Wednesday evening at the BayArena, in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of next week’s decisive second leg.
The German side broke the deadlock early in the second half when Robert Andrich scored in the 46th minute, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
However, Arsenal struck late in the match as Kai Havertz converted a penalty in the 89th minute, rescuing a valuable draw for the London club and providing a psychological boost ahead of the return leg.
Leverkusen entered the match determined to capitalize on home advantage and secure a comfortable result before traveling to London.
The BayArena has been a stronghold for the German side, who had remained unbeaten in their previous six home matches.
On the other hand, Arsenal relied on the impressive momentum they built during the league phase of the competition under Spanish manager Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners produced a remarkable campaign, becoming the first team in UEFA Champions League history to win all eight matches in the league phase, scoring 23 goals while conceding only four.
Arsenal advanced directly to the Round of 16 after topping the league phase standings.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen secured their place in this stage by defeating Olympiacos FC 2–0 on aggregate in the playoff round.
The London club hopes to continue its strong form this season and challenge for the European title, particularly after avoiding several of Europe’s biggest clubs in the draw prior to the later stages of the tournament.
Leverkusen, meanwhile, aims to overcome inconsistent domestic results and keep its European hopes alive, relying on its solid home record, having conceded just one goal in its last six matches at the BayArena.
