Claudio Tapia, the president of the Argentine Football Association, has confirmed that the iconic number 10 shirt will be retired following the international retirement of the Tango legend Lionel Messi.

The 36-year-old Inter Miami star will be the last player to don this iconic jersey.

Claudio Tapia, the president of the Argentine Football Association, stated, "When Messi retires from playing for the national team, we will not allow anyone else to wear the number 10 after him. This number 10 shirt will be retired for life in honor of him. This is the least we can do for Messi."

Messi is set to participate in this year's Copa America and could play in the 2026 World Cup. No player after him will wear this jersey, which has been previously worn by legends like Maradona and Messi.

There was a previous attempt by the Argentine Football Association to retire the famous shirt in honor of Maradona, but it was later reversed, and it was worn by Ortega and Juan Román Riquelme before Messi.

Messi has scored 106 goals in 180 international matches and has won the Copa America and the World Cup with the Argentine national team.

It's worth noting that Messi has had a remarkable start to his career with Inter Miami in 2023, scoring 11 goals in 14 matches and leading the team to their first-ever title.
