On Wednesday, the current world champions captured a precious 1-0 win over their biggest continental opponent Brazil in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The goal was scored by Nicolás Otamendi.

The Wednesday game was Brazil’s first home defeat ever in a World Cup qualifier.

In addition, the game was Brazil’s third consecutive loss in the round-robin tournament.

Messi wasn't among the starting XI, but he left the pitch in 78:00, receiving huge applause from the fans.

Argentina are leading the South American qualifying standings. They also celebrated with the fans at the historic stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The last time both teams collided in this arena was two years ago where Ángel di Maria scored the only goal to give his team the Copa America title.

Before the game, huge clashes erupted between the Brazilian and Argentinian fans, leading some players to be involved in a mini brawl, before Messi asked the players to leave the field and back to the locker room until the Argentinian fans received a more respectful treat on their point of view.
