Argentina is preparing for one of the most controversial legal and sporting cases in its history, as the date of March 17, 2026, has been set for the retrial into the death of football legend Diego Maradona.

This new trial comes after the collapse of the first proceedings in May 2025, following a major scandal that upended the court.

In May, the trial in San Isidro, north of Buenos Aires, was nullified after Judge Julieta McIntosh was revealed to have participated in the filming of an unauthorized documentary about the case titled “Divine Justice.”

The revelation sparked a media firestorm and led to the resignation of the two other judges involved, plunging the case into legal and public uncertainty, according to Argentina’s Infobae newspaper.

According to the court’s latest decision, a preliminary hearing will take place on November 12 to review and decide on the admissibility of evidence before the main trial begins in March.

The case centers on eight members of Maradona’s medical team, charged with “potentially intentional homicide”—meaning they allegedly knew their actions could lead to the Argentine star’s death.

Seven of them will be tried together, while one nurse will face a separate trial.

Maradona died on November 25, 2020, of pulmonary edema while recovering at home following brain surgery to remove a hematoma. The initial trial raised serious questions about his medical care, with reports describing the room where he died as dirty, disorganized, and lacking basic medical equipment, including a defibrillator.
