The Argentine Football Association has reportedly rejected the proposal to stage the upcoming CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions between Argentina national football team and Spain national football team at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
The match had originally been scheduled to take place on March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar, but recent developments in the region have cast doubt on the possibility of hosting the game there.
According to TyC Sports, the Argentine federation is unwilling to play the match at Real Madrid’s home stadium, arguing that it would give Spain a significant home advantage in front of its own supporters.
The report added that CONMEBOL is expected to inform its counterpart UEFA of Argentina’s position regarding the proposed venue.
Meanwhile, Spanish outlet Diario AS reported that the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has emerged as the preferred venue for the clash between the Copa América champions and the European champions.
The match was initially set to be staged in Doha, but the latest geopolitical developments in the Middle East have made hosting the Finalissima in Qatar increasingly unlikely.
The same circumstances have also reportedly led to the cancellation of a planned international friendly between Egypt national football team and Spain national football team.
Officials from UEFA and CONMEBOL reportedly view Madrid and the Santiago Bernabéu as the most practical option for an event of this magnitude, with only security and logistical arrangements remaining before a final decision is made.
