Arab countries on Thursday marked Arab Blood Donor Day, observed annually on March 12, to promote voluntary blood donation and raise public awareness about the importance of regular donations to ensure safe and adequate blood supplies across the region.

The occasion was approved by the Council of Arab Health Ministers during its 58th ordinary session held on March 14, 2023, in Algeria.

Health officials say the initiative highlights the humanitarian role played by voluntary blood donors and reflects values of solidarity and social responsibility across the Arab world.

The Council of Arab Health Ministers also established the Arab Authority for Blood Transfusion Services in 1979 to develop blood transfusion systems, strengthen blood banks, and improve medical and technical capacities in member states while applying international standards for blood collection, testing, storage, and distribution.

In 2001, the council launched the Arab Award for Blood Transfusion Services, granted every two years to individuals or institutions in recognition of outstanding contributions to advancing blood services in the region.
