Antiquities Min. Inspects Greco-Roman Museum, Jewish Temple in Alex

Dr. Khalid Al Anani, Minister of Antiquities inspected the Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria on Tuesday, to follow up the latest developments of work there.

He was accompanied by Dr. Abdel Aziz Qanswa, Governor of Alexandria, Brig. Gen. Hisham Samir, Assistant Minister of Antiquities for Engineering Affairs and Mohamed Metwally, Director General of Alexandria Antiquities accompanied the minister over his tour.

During the tour, the minister visited various halls of the museum to get acquainted with the latest developments in the works of the Greco- Roman Museum.

The museum aims to highlight the beauty and prosperity of Alexandria during the Greco-Roman era.

The minister also met with the High Committee of Museum Screening and representatives of the Engineering Authority to revise the timelines for the completion of the project.

The construction and restoration of the museum are scheduled to end by June 2020.

During the meeting, members of the Higher Committee confirmed that it has made the final touch of the new museum display and the distribution of the selected antiquities of mosaic which were recently discovered in the area of the Kom el-Dakka area in Alexandria.

Brig. Gen. Hesham Samir, Assistant Minister of Antiquities for Engineering Affairs, said that the development and restoration of the museum are carried out by the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces in accordance with the cooperation protocol signed between the ministry and the authority in April 2017.

The protocol paved the way to develop and restore 8 archaeological sites, including the Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria, the Museum of Civilization, the Jewish Temple in Alexandria , Palace of Mohamed Ali Pasha at Shubra, the Pyramids Plateau, the Palace of Alexan in Assiut Governorate, and the Palace Baron Empain at Heliopolis, Cairo .

Development and restoration of the museum began in February 2018 after a cessation of nearly eight years.

Dr El Anani inspected restoration of the Jewish Temple Eliyahu Hanabi (Eliyahu the prophet) in Alexandria to find out the latest developments, which are expected to be completed within the next three months.

The tour included inspecting the entire building, all the delicate and architectural restoration work along the art workshops for the restoration of the architectural elements of the temple.

Nearly 75% of the restoration project has been completed.
