Anti-Napoleon Law Prohibits Meghan Markle from Running for Presidency  of USA

Legal experts have raised the possibility that Megan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex and wife of Prince Harry, the son of the  Crown Prince of the United Kingdom (UK), will be barred from running for the presidency of the United States of America (USA)  through a little-known constitutional amendment made 211 years ago.

An amendment to the constitution was made in 1810 to prevent anyone with "titles of nobility conferred by a foreign power" from assuming a sovereign position in the USA, according to legal experts.

The centuries-old amendment was initially proposed to prevent Napoleon's nephew from seeking power after his brother married American social activist Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson amid speculation that their son might run for office.

That law could be revived despite it was being enacted to prevent any plans by the Duchess to run,  according to the Telegraph, a UK daily newspaper.

While Meghan Markel has never spoken of a real intent to run for the office of the USA President, biographer Tom Power has previously claimed that the prospect of a presidential campaign is "possible, even probable".

Mr. Power, who was said to have been paid a six-figure sum for telling the story of the pregnant duchess earlier this year, said she was likely to launch a US presidential campaign but would struggle with a barrage of criticism of politicians because she was "sensitive".

It comes as critics and royal family aides have argued that the duchess is using her title inappropriately when it comes to political matters.

US politicians say Meghan has presented herself as the Duchess of Sussex, which has led to criticism that she was using "an ambitious politician's tactics" and adopting a "ruthless streak" to try to influence the Biden administration rebuilding bill more effectively.

Her allies say this is her legal name after she changed it from Meghan Markle when she married Prince Harry in May 2018.
