Angelina Jolie finally joined Instagram on Friday, and published her first post, putting a spotlight on what’s happening in Afghanistan.

"Angie felt compelled to join in a moment when women and young people in Afghanistan are losing the ability to communicate on social media and express themselves freely," a source close to Jolie told ET.

The source added that the actress felt that she’s able to be a part of the effort to amplify their voices, that's why she joined the platform. Hence, in her first official Instagram post, Jolie shared a letter from a teenage girl in Afghanistan.

"Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely," she wrote in the post.

"So I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights."

In April, ET spoke with the phenomenal actress ahead of the release of her film 'Those Who Wish Me Dead'. During this interview, she opened up about going through a phase in her life where she felt broken, much like her character.

"I've had my share of things that made me feel hard to speak too much about it, but just overwhelming or broken," she admitted. "So to have an opportunity, I feel very lucky. I wish all women could have this at times in their lives."
