Anani: "Al-Ikhtyar" Restores Role of Art in Shaping Consciousness

Abed Anani, an actor who shone as Emad, a terrorist and right arm of "Hisham Ashmawi", in the series Al-Ikhtyar "Choice" which achieved the highest watching this year, is one of many names who were raised on stage for successive generations.

Among those names are a group of the best stars of art in Egypt. The public’s comments on that series ranged from feelings of admiration to hatred which reflected from personal abhorrence.

"SEE" conducted an interviewed Anani. Below is the excerpt of the interview.

*What do you think about the audience comments on Emad?

I laugh when I see these posts on the sites of social media.  Some of the comments express hate and strange hostile phrases as if I am the real Emad. The audience's comments are important as evidence of success, follow-up, and interest, whether they were positive or negative. And it is normal for a series that may achieve the highest percentage of watching of a series in 10 or 15 years.

*What about the ridicule of  "Kohl"- eye mascara?

Kohl is one of the details that I added after studying the character that was written well, in addition to a number of additions that I collected to embody the image that is closest to  Emad as the shape of the beard and hair that develops with the character.

The touches show the stages of transformation of the character until dyeing hair and beard later.

These details that I would have loved people to notice more than Kohl and this may come successively.

*Do you think we need a series like this and why?

Certainly, the experiment must be repeated again and third. We are rediscovering the role of the  Egyptian art, which represents our great civilization,   embraces and contributes  to all religions, in addition to the influence of art and its strength as a wall against destructive ideas.

Perhaps the success of "Al-Ikhtyar" is an extension of the success of the movie "Al Mammar- the Corridor", which proves that we need to set a frame for many championships, not only the army, but from real Egyptian history and personalities, and tell their stories from reality.

*How do you describe the series of " Al-Ikhtyar from your point of view?

The elements of that series as a work of art are all good and integrated, which helped it achieve its goal-discussing views neutrally between the two sides.

The most important thing that distinguishes these series is that it is the first work that does not show his characters in a typical manner, so they appeared as normal and real human beings who resemble the people around us.  Events and facts were shown in a frame of reality.

*Do you think that the theater and its actors have lost the right place nowadays?

Of course, we lost the right to our mass culture, because the theater was limited to the public in one kind, which is comedy.

Theatre had status and prestige in the sixties of the last century, then the comedy theater prevailed, which we preserve its great works today and watch them on all occasions.

But the other kinds of theater have the sincerity of a large number of stars during those long years, from before me, my generation and the upcoming generation.

The names of most of whom are unknown, as watching theater is limited to some intellectuals, friends and a few audiences interested in the theater.

Even after the January revolution that caused a major theatrical breakthrough, especially after the emergence of the Egypt Theater. This brought back the audience to the theater.

The public still links theater with comedy only, but the theater will always remain one of the most important sources of breeding artistic generations of drama and cinema.

*Is a terrorist an absent-minded or conscious person?

Of course, a terrorist is an absurd and foolish person, when one of them is convinced of the idea that he possesses the absolute truth and then it comes to believing that he has the right to impose his facts on others through violence. He does not have any wisdom or logic. We have an example to prove these facts when Emad returns from Libya with 40 men with the aim of penetrating the Egyptian border.
