S.L. Benfica are reportedly preparing for the possible departure of head coach José Mourinho amid growing speculation linking him with a sensational return to Real Madrid CF.
According to reports from Sky Sports, Benfica have identified Marco Silva and Rúben Amorim as the leading candidates to succeed Mourinho if he leaves the Portuguese giants this summer.
Marco Silva and Amorim on Benfica Shortlist
Marco Silva, currently in charge of Fulham F.C., remains highly regarded across Europe despite approaching the end of his contract with the London club. The Portuguese coach has also attracted interest from several Premier League sides following his impressive work with Fulham.
Meanwhile, former Manchester United F.C. manager Rúben Amorim is available after leaving Old Trafford earlier this year, making him another strong option for Benfica’s hierarchy.
Mourinho recently confirmed that Benfica have offered him a contract extension, though the veteran manager stated he has not yet made a final decision regarding his future and prefers to delay discussions until the end of the season.
At the same time, Spanish media reports claim that Real Madrid are close to reaching a full agreement with Benfica over Mourinho’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu, with compensation reportedly worth around €7 million.
If the move is finalized, Mourinho would begin a second spell with Real Madrid after previously managing the club between 2010 and 2013.
During his first tenure in Madrid, Mourinho won the La Liga title and helped shape one of the club’s most competitive eras, particularly during his fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola and FC Barcelona.
Reports indicate that an official announcement regarding Mourinho’s appointment could arrive next week once final details are completed.
