Since 2021, and by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, the world has observed Global Media and Information Literacy Week annually from 24 to 31 October. The week aims to enhance the capacity of individuals and institutions to access reliable information amid the proliferation of digital media and the accelerating pace of news circulation.

His Excellency Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and gead of the Media and Communication Sector, stated that this occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of engaging constructively with media flows, while upholding ethical and educational values and adopting a critical and discerning approach to the content that permeates the digital sphere.

In this context, Ambassador Khattabi announced that the forthcoming session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, scheduled to be held in Baghdad in November, will address several key issues aimed at advancing joint Arab media action. These include the adoption of a comprehensive strategy on media and information literacy to safeguard individuals from misleading and false information, as well as the development of plans to integrate digital literacy into educational curricula.

Ambassador Khattabi reaffirmed that media and information literacy remains the most effective means of ensuring the safe exchange of information and empowering citizens—particularly youth—to engage positively with technological progress and participate actively in public life and development initiatives within the framework of open digital citizenship.
