The semifinals of the UEFA Women's Champions League get underway this weekend, with defending champion Arsenal Women facing record winner Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, while FC Barcelona Femení aims to reach a sixth consecutive final.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich Women enter the last four as the only remaining side yet to reach a final. The German champions arrive in strong form after securing a fourth straight domestic league title and will host Barcelona in Saturday’s first leg.
Barcelona, however, appears a formidable opponent. The Catalan side has lost just once in all competitions this season and advanced to the semifinals with a dominant aggregate victory over Real Madrid Femenino.
Their attacking strength has stood out, scoring more goals than any other team while maintaining one of the tightest defenses in the competition.
Key contributors include Ewa Pajor and Alexia Putellas, who have played central roles in the team’s run.
Bayern will be looking to respond after a heavy defeat in their previous meeting with Barcelona earlier in the competition, as they seek a first-ever final appearance.
Sunday’s clash sees Arsenal take on Lyon in a repeat of last season’s semifinal. The French side has historically had the upper hand, including a win in London earlier in the campaign.
However, Arsenal demonstrated resilience last season by overturning a first-leg deficit to eliminate Lyon.
Players such as Melchie Dumornay for Lyon and Mariona Caldentey for Arsenal were influential in that encounter and are expected to play key roles again.
Lyon’s only defeat this season came in the quarterfinals against VfL Wolfsburg Women, before responding emphatically in the return leg.
Arsenal, in contrast, has shown inconsistent form, progressing past Chelsea Women but suffering recent domestic setbacks.
The return legs are scheduled for May, with the final set to take place in Oslo on May 23, where Europe’s top clubs will compete for the continent’s most prestigious title.
