Hours ago, authorities in Algeria decided to extend the closure of all its land, sea and air borders until further notice, after reporting a big increase in the number of infections with the novel coronavirus in recent days.

A cabinet meeting chaired by Algerian President Abdel Majid Tebboune adopted several recommendations, the most prominent of which is to keep all borders closed, and to tighten penalties for all violators of inpidual or group.

According to the statement of the Algerian presidency, whose details were read by Al-Ain News, President Tebboune, his prime minister, Abdelaziz Jarad, ordered to study the measures that should be taken with the scientific committee in the coming days to "curb the spread of the pandemic."

The Algerian President asked the Ministry of Health to establish statistics on the pandemic cases for each governorate and "deal with them with greater realism."

In the last days, Algeria recorded  a large and unprecedented rise in the number of people infected with the Covid-19, where on Sunday came the largest number of infections since the outbreak of the virus 3 months ago, with 305 new cases, bringing the total number of infected to 13,273 confirmed cases .

On the other hand, Algerian President Tebboune criticized certain sides - which the statement did not name - for "promoting the myths of the absence of coronavirus, and that it is a fabricated disease for political purposes."

"He was surprised by these irresponsible actions, while the fatalities from this pandemic counted in thousands every day across the world, starting with the more developed countries," the statement read.

Earlier, the Algerian Ministry of Health ruled out that the country would be facing a second wave of Coronavirus, and attributed the reasons for the increased spread of "Covid-19" significantly to what it called "the irresponsible behavior of many citizens who did not adhere to the measures of social and physical distancing."
