Algeria national team striker Mohamed Amine Amoura has issued a public apology following controversy surrounding his goal celebration during Algeria’s 1–0 victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The match, played on Wednesday evening in Rabat, Morocco, saw Algeria secure qualification to the quarterfinals after an extra-time goal scored by Adel Boulbina in the 119th minute.

However, attention shifted after the final whistle due to Amoura’s celebration, which some interpreted as offensive toward a Congolese supporter in the stands.

Speaking via his official Instagram account, Amoura clarified that his actions were misunderstood and carried no provocative intent.

He explained that the match was intense and emotional, and that his celebration was spontaneous and meant only in a light hearted manner.

He said that he was not aware of the symbolism of the person or image in the stands at that moment.

He added that he had no bad intentions or desire to offend anyone."

"I respect the Congo team and its supporters and wish them the best, including qualification for the World Cup. If my behavior was misunderstood, I sincerely apologize,” the player continued.

The incident gained widespread attention after images of a Congolese fan, later identified as Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, went viral on social media.

Nkuka became a symbol of loyalty and passion after standing motionless throughout the match and later being seen in tears following his team’s elimination.

Nkuka’s emotional reaction resonated with fans across Africa and beyond, drawing praise for his unwavering support and sportsmanship.

Many compared his posture and presence to historic figures of Congolese resistance, highlighting the deep cultural symbolism associated with his image.
