The acclaimed singer died in the early hours of Tuesday after a struggle with the disease. He was 59.

Hossam Hassan Hossny announced the news on Facebook, saying:" Alaa Abdel Khalik passed away. Pray for him. We belong to Allah and to Him we will return."

Several singers and celebrities including Amr Diab, Moustafa Amar, Ehab Tawfik, Hamid El Shaeri, Mohamed Fouad, Mourad Makram, Mohamed Diab, and more took to social media to pay tribute to the acclaimed singer.

Abdel Khalik was born on February 23, 1964, and studied music at the Institute of Arab Music, specializing in playing the flute.

He was a member of the “Friends” band, which was founded by the late legend Ammar El Sherei in 1980 and launched their stardom. The band also included Mona Abd El Ghany and former singer Hanan.

Afterward, Abdel Khalik met Hamid El Shaeri, who helped him distribute and release his first solo album, “Mersal”, in 1985. The pair also collaborated on the duet “Bahebek Koun” from the same album.

Then he released albums “Weyaki” (1987), “Alashanak” (1989), “Ragelek” (1990), “Hatarafini” (1991), “Etghayarti” (1992), “Maktoub Aam” (1993), “Lazim” (1995), “Tayyara Waraq” (1997), “Al Helm” (1998), “El Leila” (2000), and "Ain B Ain" (2002).

Abdel Khalik halted singing in the early 2000s following a health ailment that affected his vocal cords. He returned with the 2007 album “Hob Mish Aidy”.

In 2017, he was reunited with band members Mona Abd El Ghany and Hanan in his last interview with veteran actress and TV presenter, Esaad Younis on her “Sahebat Al-Saada” program.

Afterward, Abdel Khalik disappeared from the artistic scene for 6 years after suffering from illness.

He made his last public appearance at his daughter's wedding last May. Photos from the ceremony showed the singer wearing sunglasses and looking very tired as he was surrounded by a number of his close celebrity friends Moustafa Amar, Ehab Tawfik, Hamid El Shaeri, Mohamed Mohi, Hisham Abbas, and Hossam Hossny.

The appearance left fans deeply worried, who circulated the photos online and prayed for his speedy recovery.
