Al-Mashat to Bloomberg: Egypt's Tourism Business Is Good

Tourism Minister Dr. Rania Al-Mashat said that the Egypt's tourism business is good, adding the numbers of the inbound tourist traffic coming to the country approached to rates of the peak years.

During an interview with 'Balance of Power' program aired on Bloomberg presented by David Westin, Al-Mashat pointed out that Egypt's tourism grew by 30% in 2018 which is "so close to the peaks."

Al-Mashat stressed the importance of the tourism sector for Egypt as it represents nearly 15% of the GDP, adding: "What is quite significant is the persity that the country provides."

The minister noted that tourism is essential in creating jobs for many people who live in different destinations.

She talked about the Egypt-Tourism Reform Program which she was inspired during her work at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Egyptian Central Bank.

"The vision, in E-TRP, was formulated with the private sector which dominates 98% of the tourism in Egypt. It is one of the very rare sectors where basically dominated by the private sector," Al-Mashat said.

"E-TRP's vision aims to create a sustainable tourism sector and increase competitiveness by adopting international standards," she stated.

The structural reforms include legislative reforms, administrative reforms, branding and promotion, reforms in infrastructure related to the tourism and in line with the international standards, the minister added

"The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have a place in the E-TRP," she affirmed.

Commenting on Thomas Cook's bankruptcy, Al-Mashat pointed out the British tourism isn't the main market for Egypt, saying: "What we had invested time in the past few years is to persify the markets where tourists come."

She noted that Europe is the main tourism market for Egypt with 55%, topped by Germany.
