His Eminence Dr. Ahmed al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and Dr. Maulen Ashim Bayev, Chairman of the Kazakh Senate, will inaugurate "Al-Dhahir Baybars" Mosque tomorrow, Sunday, after the completion of renovations and the conclusion of all maintenance and restoration work. The restoration project started in 2007, then halted in 2011, and resumed in 2018 with a grant from the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Al-Dhahir Baybars Mosque is one of the most important historical mosques in Cairo. It was established by King Al-Dhahir Baybars al-Bunduqdari in 665 AH / 1267 CE and completed its construction in the month of Shawwal in 667 AH, corresponding to June 1269 CE. The layout of Al-Dhahir Baybars Mosque resembles that of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
The historical relations between Al-Azhar and Kazakhstan are characterized by a strong bond, which is reinforced through academic, cultural, and religious exchange between the two parties. Al-Azhar is always ready to support Kazakhstan with all its needs for scholarships and specialized training, and welcomes Kazakh imams to study at the Al-Azhar International Academy for training imams and preachers. This aims to enhance their communication skills, study contemporary issues, and refute the ideas of extremist groups.
The opening ceremony will be attended by a number of ministers, ambassadors, Kazakh and Egyptian religious leaders, including Dr. Mohammed Mokhtar Gomaa, the Egyptian Minister of Awqaf (Religious Endowments), Dr. Ahmed Issa, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Mohammed Al-Dawini, the Deputy of Al-Azhar Sheikh, Dr. Salama Dawoud, the President of Al-Azhar University, Dr. Nazir Ayyad, the Secretary-General of the Islamic Research Complex, Ambassador Kairat Lama Sharif, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Cairo, and a high-level delegation from the fraternal Republic of Kazakhstan.
