Vice President of Indonesia: We are keen to benefit from Al-Azhar's pioneering experiences in training imams

Today, Wednesday morning, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Al-Duwaini, Deputy of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, met Mr. Ma‘rouf Amin, Vice President of Indonesia, in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The meeting falls within the framework of Al-Duwaini’s visit to Indonesia to participate in the NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) 100th-anniversary celebration and attend the activities of the first International Conference on Civilization Jurisprudence, entitled "New Islamic Fiqh for the new human civilization."

Mr. Ma‘rouf Amin expressed to Dr. Al-Duwaini his appreciation for the great role played by Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif and by His Eminence, the Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb in serving the causes of the Muslim world and supporting Muslims around the world, especially in Indonesia. He stressed that Al-Azhar is the academic destination of Muslims who seek to acquire religious and legal knowledge. He also noted that Indonesia appreciates Al-Azhar’s hosting of Indonesian students registered in Al-Azhar's prestigious institutes and universities and provides all means of comfort for them to acquire knowledge.

The Indonesian vice president indicated that Al-Azhar graduates in Indonesia are highly regarded and that they hold the highest positions in the country. He also pointed out that they are respected around the world as role models due to their knowledge and moderate approach. He confirmed Indonesia's keenness to strengthen its relationship with Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif and to benefit from its pioneering expertise in training imams and preachers, combating extremism and radicalism, and its promoting moderation curricula that carry goodness and love for the whole world.

For his part, Prof. Al-Duwaini conveyed the greetings of His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb to the Indonesian President, Mr. Joko Widodo, and the Indonesian people, his appreciation for the strong relationship between Indonesia and Al-Azhar and of Indonesia’s efforts in supporting the causes of the Muslim nation and preserving Islamic heritage.

Prof. Al-Duwaini also expressed his pleasure to visit Indonesia and share with the Indonesian people the NU 100th anniversary celebration. He pointed out that Al-Azhar is pleased to receive Indonesian students and that they set an example in terms of discipline, morality, and keenness to properly represent their country in their second home country, Egypt. He also asserted that Al-Azhar graduates in Indonesia are ambassadors for Al-Azhar and Indonesia, promoting the moderate approach and the values of goodness, peace and brotherhood among all.
