The Arab Parliament (AP) Speaker Adel Bin Abdulrahman Al-Asoomi called for the inclusion of the Palestinian cause as a constant item on the agenda of the NAM Parliamentary Network.

The request is based on the humanitarian and ethical principles on which the Movement was founded and in respect of the Palestinian people’s most basic rights to live freely and with dignity and to establish their independent State with Jerusalem as its capital.

Al-Asoomi added that since the establishment of the NAM the Palestinian issue has received unequivocal and sustained support from its members proceeding from their full belief in the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

"On the ground, all of that runs counter the intransigence and persistent violations by the occupying Power's authorities which continue to disregard the norms of international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy," he noted.

Al-Asoomi called the members of the Network to adopt strong positions to reject and condemn such violations and to support and uphold the inalienable and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people at all of the Network's conferences and standing committees.

The remarks came during the participation of the AP speaker at the head of a high-level parliamentary delegation at the first Conference of the NAM Parliamentary Network.

The conference is hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan in the capital Baku from June 30 to July 2, in the presence of H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The AP speaker addressed this important Conference, stressing that the establishment of the NAM Parliamentary Network came at a convenient moment requiring parliamentary support for the Non-Aligned Movement to achieve the noble goals for which it was established.

He also pointed out the Ten Principles of the Bandung Conference of 1955, which served as the main starting point for the establishment of the NAM, primarily:

  • Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, abstention from intervention or interference in the internal affairs of another country.
  • Respect for the right of all peoples to live freely and with dignity.
  • Respect for international law and the realization of the principle of international justice.

Al-Asoomi also called the members of the Network to support all Arab and international efforts to reach final political settlements to the crises witnessed in the Arab region, namely in Yemen, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and Lebanon, in fulfillment of their peoples' legitimate aspirations to achieve security, stability, and development and to preserve their territorial integrity, and reject and condemn all external interventions that contribute to fuelling and prolonging these conflicts.

During his speech, Al-Asoomi also addressed other challenges of the economic and development dimension and the new global economic crisis and reiterated that only global solidarity and the application of the foundations and norms of sustainable development in its overall concept could emerge from those challenges.
