Al Ahly moved closer to the CAF Champions League quarter-final after snatching a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Etoile du Sahel on Sunday at Al-Salam Stadium.

Junior Ajayi put the Red Devils ahead when Ali Maâloul swung a low cross to midfielder El-Shahat, who fired a right-foot shot saved by Etoile du Sahel's defender and Ajayi slotted the rebound into the empty net in the 32nd minute.

El Shenawy was brought into action for the first time in the 6th minute as his save denied Karim Laribi's powerful shot.

Fourteen minutes later, Laribi unleashed an excellent shot, but El Shenawy made a brilliant save to prevent the ball from getting into his net.

Marwan Mohsen came close to double the Red Devils' scoring in the 54th minute after unleashing a left-foot shot from the inside of the box into the bottom right corner.

The Red Devils are now at the top of Group B with ten points followed by du Sahel (2nd) with nine points, Sudan's Al Hilal (3rd) with nine points, while Platinum come fourth with only one point.

The eight-time African champions have to draw or pull off the victory against Al Hilal in order to book their ticket in the quarter-final on Saturday, while the Tunisian side will host Platinum in Tunisia in the same day.
