Ajax have officially announced the appointment of Spanish coach Míchel Sánchez Muñoz as the club’s new head coach on a contract that runs until June 30, 2028.
The Dutch club confirmed that Míchel will take charge of the first team as part of its plans to restore Ajax’s domestic and European competitiveness. Details regarding the rest of the coaching staff are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Míchel has built an impressive reputation in Spanish football, beginning his managerial career with Rayo Vallecano before moving to Huesca in 2019.
He rose to prominence during his time at Girona, where he oversaw a remarkable transformation. His greatest achievement came in the 2023-24 season when he guided the club to a third-place finish in La Liga, securing the highest league position in Girona’s history and earning widespread recognition across European football.
Ajax sporting director Jordi Cruyff welcomed the arrival of the Spanish coach, highlighting his ambition, strong leadership qualities, and tactical philosophy.
Cruyff stated that Míchel’s commitment to attacking football and player development aligns perfectly with Ajax’s traditional identity. He also pointed to the coach’s success at Girona as evidence of his ability to build a sustainable and competitive project.
Míchel expressed his pride at joining one of Europe’s most historic clubs and thanked the Ajax hierarchy for their confidence in him.
