Ain Shams Launches Energy Excellence Center in Presence of New US Amb.

Engineering Faculty Ain Shams University, inaugurated today, the Excellence Center in Energy, with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in cooperation with the Higher Education and Scientific Research Ministry and MIT.

The Centre aims to promote applied research, scholarship and innovation in the energy field.

The Center was launched by US Ambassador Jonathan Cohen, Ms. Cherie Carlin, USAID Mission Director, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Energy, and Dr. Sahar Nasr, Minister of Investment and International Cooperation.

The distinguished guests were accompanied by Dr. Mahmoud Al-Matini. President of Ain Shams University, Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, the Faculty of Engineering Dean, Ain Shams University, Dr. Eric Grimson, Advisor to MIT, and Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, Senior Researcher at MIT.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar said that the new center is part of USAID's five-year, $ 90 million initiative, which also includes the Center of Excellence in Agriculture hosted by Cairo University in partnership with Cornell University.

The Water Excellence Center at Alex University in partnership with the American University in Cairo.

The three centers focus on areas identified by the Egyptian government as their priorities, starting with Egypt's Vision 2030, which will lead research and innovation in key sectors of Egypt's future economic growth.

The minister stressed that a great effort has been made in three years to reach these results now; the 180 years since the establishment of the Engineering Faculty, Ain Shams University and its cooperation with the most important Institute of Energy MIT, is a new achievement in the higher education field in Egypt.

As a result of this cooperation, 27 students travel to the institute in America for training and 93 students will travel next year.

He explained that Egypt is a regional leader in Africa and the Middle East in the field of scientific research and innovation, especially in cooperation with the American side.

Also, Egypt seeks to be among the 30 most powerful countries in the world.

On his part, Cohen explained that the Center of Excellence in Energy would support research that plays a critical role in the growth of the Egyptian economy and job creation.

It will also provide scholarship opportunities for students to continue studying in energy-related fields in both Egypt and the United States, in line with Egypt's current needs.

In the same vein, Dr. El-Matiny said that the university is proud to be chosen to host the Center of Excellence in Energy by the American side; Ain Shams is one of the universities working in this huge project in cooperation with the universities of Mansoura and Aswan.

He added that the university seeks to participate in many fields of reform and development of higher education to support of scientific research and innovation

In addition, the new center is an important step to promote the goals of sustainable development for Egypt.

Dr. Ashour explained that the launching of Excellence Center in Energy in partnership with the American MIT Institute, ranked No. 1 in the engineering and technology field in the world, is the first of its kind in Egypt.
