The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be the first to prominently feature artificial intelligence (AI) technology, marking a significant milestone for participants and spectators.
While the full potential of AI is anticipated to be more prominent in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Paris 2024 will lay the groundwork with AI-driven innovations across various sectors.
AI will enhance several aspects of the Paris 2024 Games, including transportation, technology, stadium design, staff selection, energy efficiency, automated image summaries, and even officiating.
The goal is to create an Olympics that is not only more efficient but also of a higher standard.
Ilario Corna, the Chief Information Officer of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), emphasizes that "sports are not immune to the rapid adoption of AI and the transformative changes it brings."
In an interview with EFE, Corna stated, "We see it as an opportunity to enhance equality, excellence, and solidarity within the Olympic movement."
In 2023, the IOC established a working group that developed the 'Olympic AI Agenda,' which outlines five primary objectives:
• Supporting athletes
• Ensuring fair competition
• Promoting safe sports
• Equitable access to AI benefits
• Sustainability
• Public engagement and efficient governance within the IOC
The IOC believes AI has the potential to significantly impact athletes' lives worldwide, from injury prevention to online harassment protection, personalized training schedules, and improved officiating.
In Paris, AI will be utilized to automatically generate video clips for online users. With over 11,000 hours of footage, equivalent to about 1.2 years, broadcasters with rights to the content lack the resources to manage all of it.
AI will allow for personalized footage creation based on user preferences, ensuring diverse and tailored content delivery.
Additionally, the IOC will provide athletes with a chatbot to answer any questions they may have regarding participation rules, further enhancing the accessibility and efficiency of information dissemination.
Paris 2024 will set a precedent for the integration of AI in future Olympic Games, showcasing the technology's ability to revolutionize the sporting world.
