Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, stated that the Iranian regime’s move to cut off 90 million people in digital darkness is a major human rights crime aimed at hiding the rapidly accelerating collapse of the mullahs’ rule.

Callamard said: “Since February 28, the Iranian people have been living under a suffocating digital siege that has exceeded 1,000 hours of deliberate isolation. The authorities have severed all means of communication with the outside world, depriving citizens of access to vital information and their fundamental right to communicate.”

She added: “This comprehensive blackout is not merely a technical measure; it is a political weapon and a repressive strategy used by the remnants of the Velayat-e Faqih regime to cover up grave violations and political executions—especially after the death of Ali Khamenei and the disintegration of the regime’s military apparatus under the pressure of the raging external war.”

Callamard continued: “Through this digital shutdown, the Iranian regime is trying to prevent news of its collapse from reaching the international community and to provide cover for carrying out widespread arbitrary arrests away from global scrutiny.”

She explained: “The international community’s continued complacency about what is happening behind this iron curtain amounts to encouraging the regime to persist in bloody repression, at a time when there is a growing international need to recognize the Iranian people’s right to free access to information as an integral part of their struggle for democratic change.”

Callamard stressed: “The international community’s ongoing inaction and lack of effective response to what is happening behind the blackout gives the entire regime—especially the Velayat-e Faqih at its apex—a green light to enjoy impunity and to continue its brutal campaign of repression amid global silence.”

She concluded: “The international community must take immediate and effective action to break this blackout and stand with the Iranian people in their pursuit of a democratic state that respects human rights and ends the era of darkness imposed by the collapsing mullahs’ regime.”
