An aftershock hit eastern Afghanistan on Friday, two days after a deadly earthquake rattled the region, razing hundreds of mud-brick homes and killing 1,150 people, state media reported.

Pakistan's Meteorological Department reported a 4.2 magnitude quake in southeastern Afghanistan.

According to Reuters, the epicenter was in almost the exact same place as Wednesday's quake.

The country's state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported that the aftershock killed five people and injured 11 others.

Afghanistan has a long history of earthquakes, many in the mountainous Hindu Kush region bordering Pakistan.

The quake occurred Wednesday night as people were sleeping. It was the deadliest in Afghanistan since 2002.

"The disaster struck about 44 km (27 miles) from the southeastern city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan," the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. Shaking was felt by about 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) put the earthquake's magnitude at 6.1, though the USGC said it was 5.9.

The media outlets reported that nearly 3,000 homes were destroyed or badly damaged. In the district of Gayan, at least 1,000 homes were damaged by the earthquake. About 800 homes in the Spera district of Khost province were also damaged.
