Africa has received pledges exceeding $800 million to bolster its efforts in fighting the spread of mpox, surpassing initial expectations.

Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), announced the news on Thursday.

The Africa CDC initially aimed to gather $600 million to address the mpox outbreak, which was declared a global health emergency in mid-August.

The disease, originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has since spread to neighboring countries, prompting a widespread health response.

To date, the continent has reported more than 32,000 suspected cases of mpox this year, with over 800 deaths linked to the virus.

In response to this growing threat, the Africa CDC received commitments totaling $814 million for its containment strategy.

With additional funds expected, the total could reach nearly $1 billion. The United States is expected to contribute significantly to these efforts, providing $500 million in funds and one million doses of vaccines.

The agency will also benefit from a $314 million contribution from a dedicated mpox Fund, which includes $129 million from the Pandemic Fund.

Additionally, 4.3 million doses of vaccines have already been secured, though 10 million doses are needed to bring the outbreak under control.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has also stepped in, providing $72 million for vaccine development and an additional $145 million to enhance manufacturing capabilities in Africa, with a focus on Rwanda.

Given the continuing spread of the virus and its impact on multiple countries, the Africa CDC has emphasized the need to reassess its approach.
