The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) officially got underway on Sunday evening in Morocco with a dazzling opening ceremony that lit up Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in the capital, Rabat, signaling the start of the continent’s most prestigious football tournament.
The ceremony was a vibrant celebration of Moroccan and African culture, blending color, rhythm, and visual storytelling. Performances by prominent Moroccan and African artists filled the stadium with music and dance, showcasing traditional folklore and contemporary African sounds in a tribute to the tournament’s rich cultural heritage.
High-profile officials, football legends, celebrities, and thousands of passionate fans attended the event, underscoring the significance of the tournament, which brings together 24 national teams from across Africa.
Following the opening ceremony, hosts Morocco are set to launch their AFCON campaign against Comoros in the tournament’s opening match, part of the first round of group-stage fixtures. Both teams are competing in Group A, alongside Mali and Zambia, in what is expected to be a highly competitive group.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be staged across six Moroccan cities, highlighting the country’s modern infrastructure and growing reputation as a major destination for international sporting events. The tournament is scheduled to run until January 18, promising weeks of intense football action and continental celebration.
