In a historic first for Italian football, AC Milan and Como are set to face off in a Serie A match in Perth, Australia, in February 2026.
It will mark the first time in Serie A history that an official league game is played outside Italy.
The decision came after Milan was forced to seek an alternative venue, as the San Siro Stadium will host the opening ceremony of the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
While several domestic alternatives were considered, both clubs agreed to take the game abroad, turning it into a major sporting and marketing event aimed at expanding Serie A’s global reach.
According to a report by the football finance magazine Calcio e Finanza, Australian authorities will invest around €12 million to host the match in Perth, as part of a broader tourism and sports promotion campaign.
After deducting travel, accommodation, and organizational expenses, net profits are projected to range between €8–9 million.
These earnings will be shared among stakeholders, with Milan, as the designated “home” team, receiving the largest portion, followed by Como, while a small percentage will go to other Serie A clubs that approved the overseas fixture.
Beyond the immediate financial gain, Serie A officials hope the event will strengthen the league’s international presence, boost broadcasting revenues, and enhance commercial opportunities across the Australian and Asia-Pacific markets.
The Perth showdown thus represents more than a league fixture, it’s a strategic move positioning Serie A on the global stage, competing with other major football leagues for popularity and commercial success worldwide.
