The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the judicial order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ)  regarding Israel’s commission of genocide in Gaza.

The secretary-general stressed that “the initial ruling represents a victory for human values and a resolution of the controversy over the blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law that the Gaza war represents.”

Aboul Gheit added - according to a statement, Friday - “the necessity of implementing the decisions included in the ruling completely and immediately.”

He said that the emergency measures imposed by the court on Israel with the aim of preventing acts of genocide in Gaza represent strict obligations on the occupying power and must comply with them and not violate them. They are also an obligation on the part of the international community to work effectively to achieve an immediate ceasefire and put an end to daily crimes practiced by the occupation forces in Gaza, adding that it was hoped that the initial court ruling would lead to a complete and immediate cessation of the war.

Aboul Gheit once again expressed his appreciation for the efforts of South Africa and its team of lawyers in the court sessions, noting that the ruling reflects the conviction in the conscience of the court of the arguments they presented, and the lack of conviction of the weak Israeli positions, which involved a tremendous amount of deception.

In this context, the official spokesman for the Arab League Jamal Rushdi stated that the court’s initial ruling opens the way for intense diplomatic and legal action, at the Arab and global levels, in order to stop the barbaric Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
