The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, was received by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last evening at his residence in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, and they spoke about the most recent developments in Palestine.

In light of the dangerous Israeli escalation against our people, particularly in Jerusalem, and the ongoing attacks by Israeli settlers on the holy sites, particularly Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as on the Palestinian people and their lands, President Abbas briefed Aboul Gheit on the most recent developments pertaining to the Palestinian cause.

The President emphasised during the conference that Israel must avoid taking unilateral action on the ground and adhere to all agreements made with the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The impending Arab League conference in support of Jerusalem, which aims to raise awareness of our people in Jerusalem's suffering and their right to dwell on their land, was discussed at the meeting. The summit also emphasised the requirement for additional Arab assistance for the Jerusalem-based Palestinians in the fields of housing, education, and other crucial sectors.

In the meanwhile, the President met separately with Ramtane Lamamra, the Algerian foreign minister, and the delegation they were travelling with at the former's home in Cairo.

President Abbas expressed his appreciation for Algeria's support of the Palestinian cause in all international fora as well as for its contribution to intra-Palestinian harmony during the meeting.
