Mohamed Abou El-Enein, Deputy Speaker of Egypt’s House of Representatives and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, has called on the international community to confront what he described as the “dangerous policies” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He warned that continued settlement expansion and disregard for international consensus could trigger a wave of popular anger across the region.

Speaking at the bureau meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, held in Sharm El-Sheikh from September 11 to 14, Abou El-Enein reaffirmed Egypt’s long-standing commitment to the Palestinian cause and the two-state solution. He stressed that Cairo rejects any attempt to displace Palestinians or to impose alternative settlements outside their homeland.

“Egypt’s principles are clear and unwavering—no displacement, no liquidation, and no alternative homeland for Palestinians other than their own land,” he said. “This is a red line Egypt will never allow to be crossed.”

The Egyptian lawmaker criticized Netanyahu for blocking peace efforts through expansionist settlement projects and inflammatory rhetoric. He pointed to statements from some Knesset members, including those tied to the Union for the Mediterranean, that openly called for annexing parts of Gaza. “By what right are Palestinians expelled from their land?” Abou El-Enein asked.

He further warned that Netanyahu’s actions are fueling regional instability: “I am Egyptian, and I know the anger of the Egyptian people—and I know how their President understands this anger too. The world must realize the gravity of this situation.”

Abou El-Enein also condemned Israeli strikes on Qatari mediation efforts, noting that the occupation forces targeted the very country working to broker ceasefires and promote peace.

The Sharm El-Sheikh gathering, attended by Egyptian Parliament Speaker Hanafy Gebaly and Secretary-General Ahmed Manna, highlighted Egypt’s role as host and regional mediator. International delegations praised Cairo’s organization of the meetings and its consistent stance on defending Palestinian rights.

Abou El-Enein’s remarks underscored Egypt’s position as a central voice in the Middle East, warning that unless Netanyahu’s policies are curbed, the region risks sliding into deeper unrest driven by mounting popular frustration.
